Hungarian Linguist, Philologist, Orientalist and Traveller; Alexander Cosma De Koros was born in Hungary on 4th April 1784. He is considered as the founder of Tibetology. He wrote first Tibetan-English dictionary and grammar. He planned to go to Lhasa, Tibet in 1842 but was destined to go only up to Darjeeling. During his travel he felt ill in the Tarai and breathed his last in Darjeeling. A memorial has been erected here in Darjeeling in the honour of this great soul.
The tomb of Lt. Gen. George W. Aylmer Lloyd, the discoverer of Darjeeling Hills and the founder of Darjeeling Town is also located here, near the tomb of Alexander Cosma De Kores. History of colonial Darjeeling actually begins with the arrival of Capt. Lloyd in the year 1828 at Old Gorkha Station in Ghoom, Darjeeling.
